Scaling & Root Planning

If it's been a few years since your last cleaning, and your gums are sore, bleeding a lot when you brush, and your teeth seem to be shifting, it's time to think about a deep cleaning, which we call scaling and root debridement. Also, bad breath can indicate gum health, so it's essential to get evaluated for this procedure.

For some people, regular cleanings aren't enough. Deep cleanings go beneath the gum line to remove plaque, whether it's soft or hardened. This helps gums heal, prevents tooth and bone loss, and stops gum disease from spreading.

Watch out for these signs of gum disease:

  • Bleeding when you brush and floss

  • Persistent bad breath not fixed by mouthwash

  • Red, swollen gums without a healthy appearance

  • Gaps between teeth indicating bone loss

  • Deep pockets where food and bacteria can get stuck below your gums

What to expect

2-4 appointments

After a thorough examination and standard dental cleaning, along with X-rays and a depth check of your mouth pockets, we'll schedule your quadrant scaling and root debridement, usually, split into two to four appointments, you and Dr. Liu will discuss what's best for your case.

With local anaesthesia, we use a mix of ultrasonic tools and hand scalers to gently remove harmful buildup from your teeth. Each quadrant takes about 45 minutes, ensuring your comfort. If split into two appointments, a prescribed mouthwash aids healing between sessions.

Afterward, we'll schedule a follow-up in three months to assess your mouth's health and tissue, recommending a routine cleaning schedule until bacteria is removed and pockets are manageable.
